Antalya is the gateway to the major holiday resorts in Turkey and so many different airlines from different countries coult be seen. AYT is famous for all the Russian aircraft that could be seen here. During my single day visit (only 6 hours) I was able to note not less than 4 Transaero B747s, 8 IL86 and many more Russian Tupolevs, Ilyushins and Yakovlevs, but also some Boeings and Airbusses. Spotting is officialy not allowed in Turkey, but if you behave inconspicuous you wont't get any problems. Don't spot near the airport fence as there are many guards around the airport that will see you and then you probably will get in trouble. I have described here some spots that I used during my visit in September 2007. In summer it gets quite hot in southern Turkey and so always have enough to drink with you.

Runway usage

top

From my own experience and from what I have heared from others, Runway 36C is used for landings in the morning and 36R for take offs. In the afternoon this changed and all landings and take off were carried out on 18L. I have also heard that landings in the afternoon have been carried out on 18C. Runway 18L/36R seems not be in use anymore.

Spot A

lens required 70-300mm lens
light is good from the early morning until noon
aircraft approaching 36C

From spot A you can take pictures of aircraft that are approaching runway 36C. It is located in area of greenhouses and is the parking of Millenium Golf. To get there exit the airport and after the police control point at the airport exit follow the street to the right which leads you to Lara beach. Follow this road around the airport and after about 5 km make a right turn at the first traffic lights. Then you will head back towards the airport fence. Just follow the street along the fence until the streets brings you again away from the fence. After a few hundred meters there is a sign for the Millenium Golf to your left. Now just make a left turn and follow the sign to the parking.

all these pics were taken on from the parking of Millenium Golf and I used my Nikon 2.8/80-200mm lens on my Nikon D200 which would be max 300mm on an analog camera

Spot B

lens required
light is good from noon until sunset
approaching traffic for runway 36L/36C
This spot is rather hard to find and I don't know if there might not be a better one, but this was the only one I found during my short search. To get there cross the approach path and you will find a street that runs parallel on the western side of the runway. A few hundred meters before the road makes a right turn there is a small path to a village behind a hedge. Park you car here and wait for the approaching traffic.

Spot C

top

lens required 200-500mm

traffic approaching traffic for runway 18L

Spot C is located next to a ship yard in an industrial zone in the north of the airport.

other Spots

I heared that it might be possible to photograph from the bus parking next to the Terminal. I think that must have been the old one (Terminal 1). From the Terminal 2 it might me possible to get some pictures from the gates and the Burger King restaurant in the top level.

Accomodation

top

As this part of Turkey is a major holiday resort there are a lot of hotels, but e.g. the city of Alanya is a 2 hours drive from the airport and so not the best choice for a planespotter. There are also hotels at the Lara beach, which would be a good choice or an accomodation near Belek would be better. There is also the IC Hotel next to the airport which would be a very good option as from there you can also take pictures of aircraft approaching runway 18L in the afternoon.
